Mammogram Myths Debunked: Facts Every Woman Should Know

Mammograms are surrounded by myths that keep women from getting screened. Learn the truth about radiation, pain, false positives, and when to start screening.

Despite decades of evidence showing that mammograms save lives, many women delay or avoid screening because of misconceptions. Let's separate fact from fiction and address the most common myths about mammography.

Myth 1: Mammograms Cause Cancer From Radiation

Fact: The radiation from a mammogram is extremely low — about 0.4 mSv, which is roughly equivalent to seven weeks of natural background radiation. According to the American Cancer Society, the risk of harm from this small dose is negligible compared to the benefit of detecting breast cancer early.

Modern digital mammography and 3D tomosynthesis use lower doses than older film-based systems. The imaging equipment at Advanced Medical Imaging meets all FDA safety standards and is calibrated to deliver the minimum radiation necessary for diagnostic quality images.

Myth 2: If No One in My Family Has Breast Cancer, I Don't Need Screening

Fact: About 85 percent of breast cancers occur in women with no family history of the disease. Family history is just one risk factor — age is actually the biggest one. The majority of breast cancers occur in women over 50, but cancers in younger women tend to be more aggressive.

The American College of Radiology recommends annual mammograms starting at age 40 for women at average risk. If you do have a family history, you may need to start even earlier.

Myth 3: Mammograms Are Too Painful

Fact: Mammograms involve compression of the breast, which can be uncomfortable — but the compression lasts only a few seconds per image. Most women describe it as pressure rather than pain.

Compression is necessary because it spreads the breast tissue thin, which allows for clearer images with lower radiation and reduces the chance of missing a hidden cancer.

Tips to minimize discomfort include scheduling your mammogram for the week after your period (when breasts are less tender), avoiding caffeine for a few days before, taking an over-the-counter pain reliever an hour before if needed, and communicating with your technologist if you need a moment.

Myth 4: If My Mammogram Is Normal, I Definitely Don't Have Cancer

Fact: Mammograms are highly effective, but no screening test is 100 percent accurate. According to the National Cancer Institute, mammography detects about 87 percent of breast cancers in women aged 50 and older. Some cancers — especially in women with dense breasts — may not be visible.

This is one reason why 3D mammography is so valuable. It increases detection rates, particularly in dense breast tissue. If you have dense breasts or other risk factors, your doctor may also recommend supplemental screening with ultrasound or MRI.

Myth 5: I Only Need a Mammogram If I Feel a Lump

Fact: By the time a breast cancer is large enough to feel, it has often been growing for several years. Mammography can detect cancers one to two years before they become palpable — at a stage when treatment is more effective and less invasive.

Waiting until you feel a lump defeats the purpose of screening. The goal is to catch cancer before symptoms appear.

Myth 6: Screening Mammograms Lead to Unnecessary Biopsies

Fact: It is true that some mammograms result in callbacks for additional imaging, and a small percentage of those lead to biopsies that turn out to be benign. But this is not a flaw in the system — it is how screening works.

According to the American Cancer Society, about 10 percent of women are called back after a screening mammogram, and of those, only about 5 percent are found to have cancer. The vast majority of callbacks result in additional imaging that clears the concern without a biopsy.

3D mammography has been shown to reduce unnecessary callbacks by up to 40 percent compared to 2D mammography alone.

The Bottom Line

Mammograms are safe, effective, and the best tool we have for catching breast cancer early. Do not let myths keep you from a screening that could save your life.
